Q: Can a member bring a guest to an event?

A: Yes, always. All active members may bring free guests to the annual networking party in the fall. Executive Members may bring a free guest to all panels; Friends may bring two complimentary guests. All active members may also bring paying guests to all WNBA panels ($10 non-member admission) and to all social activities, such as WNBA brunches and dinners.

Q: If I cannot attend a panel, is there an way to find out what I missed?

A: Yes, The New York Bookwoman prints panel reviews and summaries, and you can download or hear streaming audio of recent panels on the Members Only page of this Web site.

Q: Can students join?

A: Yes, student memberships are available to those who are enrolled full- or half-time in a degree program at an accredited institution of higher learning or recent graduates with less than six months' employment in the publishing industry. Student non-members may attend WNBA panels at a discount on presentation of a valid school ID.

Q: Can I publicize my personal projects by mailing or e-mailing to those listed in the annual membership directory?

A: Attempting to maintain a balance between offering increased visibility to members and respecting the privacy of members' contact info, the WNBA board reviews requests (from members and nonmembers) for use of its mailing list. Members are welcome to publicize their personal projects to the WNBA membership via mass mailings only after receiving permission from the chapter president after consultation with the board of directors.

Q: Can men join WNBA?

A: Yes, men began joining WNBA several decades ago, and men have served as presidents of two WNBA chapters.

Q: How can members benefit from the chapters in eight other cities?

A: Members of the NYC chapter of WNBA are automatically members in National WNBA. Members are welcome at other chapter activities. They can also attend WNBA-related programs and events at the annual meetings of the BEA, ALA, and MLA. They can also join international travel and study tours. You can connect with the president of a WNBA chapter in any of the other chapters. You will be warmly welcomed and invited to attend local events and board meetings.

Q: How can WNBA help members find jobs?

A: Chapter members receive e-mail announcements of current positions open in publishing in the New York Metropolitan area. Also the Membership Directory is an invaluable networking resource that lists names and contact information of many prominent members of the publishing community.

Q: Which programs have been taped, and how can tapes be obtained?

A: C-SPAN 2 for Book TV has taped two programs: "Legendary Editors" (1/17/02) and "Powerful Women in Publishing" (3/12/02). You can obtain a tape directly from C-SPAN 2 by visiting the C-Span/Book TV store.

Q: If I am moving to another city in the middle of the year, can my NYC chapter dues be applied to my new chapter?

A: No. Each WNBA chapter conducts business independently, with its own membership year and dues structure.

Q: How can I become more actively involved in WNBA behind the scenes?

A: You can take a more active role in WNBA by attending the monthly board meetings and/or by becoming a member of the Auxiliary Board, which works with the Board of Directors to set chapter policy and events. You can also volunteer to work with one of the committees listed in the printed brochure and on this Web site.
